I’ve heard of the Amazon mp3 store, a lot. In the news, blogs, DRM-free weirdos, writing in the sky, etc. I just never used it. Last night, there was an awful lot of twittering going on about Amazon vs. iTunes. In particular, Amazon offered Coldplay’s new EP for $5 cheaper than what I paid on iTunes. Crazy talk, I know. Someone asked me why I still used iTunes when I could get DRM-free, higher quality music for much less. I never really thought about it so I’m checking out Amazon. I have an iPod, iPhone and iMac so iTunes does make sense for me. The buying experience is definitely easier and more enjoyable but if I can get the same music for less, then I’m all for it. For example, I just saved $6 on The Killers new album on Amazon (I’m beginning to sound like a Geico commercial). Hooray for cheap music!
Now is when you chime in. How do you buy your music?

I heard about The Killers’ (?) new album on the radio this morning. Thought I should preview it. Nice job, Mister Music. Way to keep an open mind. Do you feel like you are about to cheat on i-Tunes?

I still buy CDs in stores. There’s never been DRM and it’s the highest quality you can easily buy and play. I can then rip it to my computer in any quality I want, and have the original back up should something happen.
If I need an occasional single or whatever, I’ll generally get it from itunes. I’m not too concerned about the DRM problem, because it’s not that restrictive with Apple, and Apple actually does have higher quality with a smaller file size.
The only reason they (itunes) doesn’t have DRM free music is because the record labels aren’t letting them have it. They trying to force Apple to loosen their 99 cent pricing scheme. That’s another reason I’ll stick with itunes. I’m not try to help the people who would like it very much to abuse their on customers.

Ok.. I went and looked.. but I felt as if I was cheating on my iMac and iTunes. I kept apologizing to them this morning.. but i think i was getting the cold shoulder from them.

Stephen -I have a bit of an issue with Amazon Mp3 right now. I received an email from a great band, linking me to download their latest EP mp3 (available online at Amazon Mp3) After I download the software and get ready to give me ears a new tune to listen to.. this is what I get:
…”We could not process your order. The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently available only to US customers located in the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia. ” aghmmmmm… ?????

I’ve heard all the talk about Amazon and I would probably say that if it was a matter of saving $3 or $4 dollars I would probably get an album from them but for the pure convenience of the one-click buy-now for a song you can’t beat iTunes.
For the single mp3s I stick to iTunes but I’ve gotten a lot of new albums from http://www.noisetrade.com. Between that and my Paste VIP subscription I keep a steady flow of new music coming in.
And portorikan, buying CDs in a store? People still do that??
