My dad’s cooking skills go as far as microwaving popcorn. So, on the occasion my mom wasn’t available, she would leave my older brother and me in charge of dinner. She would get us all excited and call it “Two Brothers Cafe.” It was such a brilliant name. Our specialty? Fried egg sandwiches. That was as far as our culinary skills would take us at age 12 and 10. Since Seth was older, he always got to fry the eggs and gave me the complex job of cooking the toast. Yes, I mastered the art of pushing down that button and grasping the perfectly browned piece of bread without burning my fingers. I would butter that piece of toast to my heart’s content, spreading it over every square inch and getting it ready for the delicious egg. I tried to convince Seth how exhilarating toast was, but it never worked - I always had the toast and was proud of it.
Thinking back on this childhood memory I have to ask myself, “How many ’small’ jobs and responsibilities do I have today that I do well?” I know it sounds simple but I want to be someone who does everything with excellence, even if it’s “making toast.”
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 (NLT)
